Gwynedd-Mercy Wins Tip-Off Tournament; Neill Named MVP

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Tournament MVP Brittany Neill scored 22 points as Gwynedd-Mercy won the 2010 Residence Inn by Marriott Tip-Off Tournament by defeating Delaware Valley, 70-59, in the title game Saturday afternoon.

Senior Stacey Judge added 12 points as the Griffins, despite 10 lead changes in the game, pulled away from a tight contest in the second half.

Neill was 8-for-16 shooting, hitting six three-pointers while adding six boards and dour assists.

Senior Kristy McGrathchipped in 11 points while freshman Natasha Matthews registered eight points and six rebounds.

Jackie Shunkwiler netted 21 while teammate Emily Soper had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Aggies (2-1). Brittany Battinieri added 10 as Del Val led 28-26 at halftime.

Trailing 50-49 with 9:08 in the game, Gwynedd took the lead for good on a three-pointer from freshman Dara Nelson. That long-range bucket kickstarted an 11-2 run giving GM the momentum it needed to pull away for the win.

McGrath and Battinieri were named to the all-tournament team along with Amy Heffner from Moravian and Rayshell Parker from Stevenson.

In the consolation game, the Greyhounds of Moravian were 72-53 winners over the Mustangs of Stevenson.  Heffner led all scorers with 23 points and also grabbed 10 caroms.

Gwynedd-Mercy is off until after the Thanksgiving break when they open conference play at Rosemont on Monday, November 29th in a 6 p.m. start.
