WILLIMANTIC, CT.  –  The Oswego State Men's Basketball team faced Eastern Connecticut State this afternoon on day 2 of the Tip-Off Tournament. The Warriors refused to back down from the Lakers, as they erased several double digit deficits on the afternoon. Oswego was able to stay resilient, taking the Eastern Connecticut Tip-Off Tournament Championship by a score of 60-50. With this win, Coach Jason Leone has become the winningest coach in Oswego State Basketball History. Leone passes Kevin Broderick who coached the Lakers from 1996 until 2009 with a 209-150 record. Leone now stands at the top of the record book with a very impressive 210-78 record in his twelfth year as the Lakers' Head Men's Basketball Coach.

Final Score: #5 Oswego State 60 (2-0, 0-0 SUNYAC), Eastern Connecticut State 50 (1-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oswego would come out in the first half shooting lights out, shooting an outstanding 46.4% (13/28) on field goal attempts.

  • The Lakers couldn't get their 3pt shots to fall in the first, shooting a troubling 20% (2/10) from beyond the arc. 

  • Oswegos defense proved to be troubling for the Warriors, holding them to only converting on 28.6% of their field goal attempts in the first.

  • The Lakers would establish a 16 point lead late in the first. However, the Warriors would rally and end the half on a 11-0 run, hitting three consecutive 3-pt shots. 

  • Oswego would lead 32-27 going into halftime. Jamal Achille led the Lakers with 9 points in the first half. Cartier Bowman would lead Oswego on the glass, grabbing seven rebounds. Devin Green and Ahkee Anderson would each add 2 assists, tying for the lead. 

  • The Warriors defense in the second half would give them the advantage in the half, causing Oswego to add seven turnovers to their total.

  • Oswego would build another double-digit lead early in the half, and the Warriors would rally yet again, going on a 11 point run to give them a 46-45 lead. 

  • Despite their struggles offensively, Oswego would hit several late free throws to help push them over the Warriors. Oswego would take a 60-50 victory over the Warriors. 

  • Oswego struggled beyond the arc, managing to hit three of their 19 3pt attempts on the afternoon. 

  • Ahkee Anderson had himself a day, shooting 50% from the field, leading the Lakers with 21 points. Anderson also led the Lakers with three assists and two steals. 

  • Jeremiah Sparks recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Cartier Bowman also recorded double digit rebounds, having 15 on the afternoon.

The Men will travel to Potsdam on Tuesday, November 15th to take on Clarkson University at 7pm. Clarkson is looking to bounce back after a close loss to Potsdam.
