More news about: Johns Hopkins

The Basics
• Score: #10 Johns Hopkins-63, #19 Yeshiva-59
• Records: JHU (23-3) • YC (25-4)
• Location: Galloway, NJ • Sports Center
• The Short Story: Junior guard Carson James scored a career-high 23 points and the 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team held off a late surge by 19th-ranked Yeshiva as the Blue Jays advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament with a 63-59 win Friday afternoon.

How it Happened
• In a first half that saw six ties and four lead changes, the Blue Jays scored nine of the last 14 points before intermission to grab a 32-28 halftime lead.  A Conner Delaney three-pointer in the final seconds gave the Blue Jays the four-point advantage.

• James came out firing in the second half as he drained a trio of three-pointers in the first 5:15 after halftime to help the Blue Jays build a 43-34 lead.  A Sidney Thybulle layup inside capped the 11-6 half-opening run that included the nine points from James.

• The Blue Jays maintained at least a five-point lead over the five minutes after Thybulle's layup, but pushed a 47-40 lead to 52-40 on a three-pointer from senior Tom Quarry and a layup from Delaney to make it a 12-point game with 7:29 to play.

• The Maccabees hovered in the nine-point range for nearly five minutes before a late surge made it interesting.  A Ryan Turell three-pointer with 2:54 on the clock trimmed the deficit to 57-51 and ignited an 11-4 spree that would draw Yeshiva within two at 61-59 with 1.4 seconds remaining.  Turell scored nine of the 11 points during the run, including a triple with 40 seconds left that made it 60-58.

• Thybulle made one-of-two free throws with two seconds on the clock after a Turell 10-footer missed the mark and Delaney was true on both of his free throw attempts with 1.1 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins moves into the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time under head coach Josh Loeffler and the seventh time in program history.

• The 23 wins for the Blue Jays this season mark the fifth time Johns Hopkins has won 23 or more games in a season; three of the five have come since Loeffler took over in 2017-18.

• The Blue Jays are now 2-0 all-time against Yeshiva with the only other meeting coming in 1979.

Inside the Box Score
• The 20-point game is the third of James' career and his 23-point effort is one better than his previous career high of 22 against Gettysburg earlier this season.  All three of his 20-point games have come since January 22.

• James tied the Johns Hopkins single-game record for three-pointers in an NCAA Tournament game with his seven today.  Tom Quarry had seven two years ago in a first-round game against Penn State Harrisburg.

• Delaney chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals and Lincoln Yeutter added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

• Turell, who came in averaging a national-best 27.1 points per game, scored 28 points for Yeshiva, which also got 12 points apiece from Gabriel Leifer and Ethan Lasko, but just seven points combined from the six other players who appeared in the game for the Maccabees.

• Yeshiva entered the game ranked 11th in the nation in scoring offense at 87.1 points per game, but fell 28 points short of that against the Blue Jays.  The 59 points tied YC's season low and marked just the second time the Macs had scored less than 70 this season.
