Norton, Mass. - February 12, 2020 - Five players scored in double figures to lead the Springfield College men's basketball team to a 100-76 victory over Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday evening.
Springfield is now 19-3, 10-3 in conference play and entered the game ranked 20th in the country in this week's D3hoops.com National Poll. The loss moved Wheaton to 6-15, 1-10.
Trey Witter (Unionville, Conn.) paced the Pride with 20 points off the bench as he shot 7-of-8 from the field, while classmate Heath Post (Cheshire, Conn.) turned in 19 points. Jake Ross (Northampton, Mass.) added 14 points, Collin Lindsay (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added 11 points, and Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) contributed 10 points. Springfield, which has won its last seven games, shot 38-for-74 (51%) from the field in the win, including knocking down 20 field goal attempts at a 57% shooting rate in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Pride used a 12-0 run in the early stages of the game to take a 14-5 lead after a jumper by Witter at the 14:06 mark. After the Lyons answered with five-straight points, Springfield opened up a 22-10 edge when Post drilled a jumper with just over 11 minutes left in the half. Another Witter jumper at 9:28 kickstarted an 11-0 burst as the Pride blew open the game, earning a 37-14 advantage following a bucket from Costa at 6:47. The Pride would head into the halftime break with a 51-34 lead as Post, Ross, and Witter combined for 33 points.
Springfield was able to coast in the second half as Ross drilled a trifecta with 13:30 remaining in regulation to help the Pride's lead balloon to 71-41. 12 different Springfield players scored in the final 20 minutes of play as the Lyons got no closer 25 points in the frame.
On Saturday, Springfield will return to Blake Arena to take on MIT at 1 pm.
