How it Happened

The 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team went wire-to-wire in a 76-60 win over visiting McDaniel in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night.

Hopkins jumped out to a 15-6 lead, fueled in part by a trio of three-pointers from junior Joey Kern and sophomores Ethan Bartlett and Tom Quarry. The teams traded scores and then a conventional three-point play by junior Conner Delaney and a fast-break one-handed dunk from Bartlett stake the Blue Jays to a 22-10 lead with 12:11 to go in the half.

A Mike Wallace triple and a Che' Colbert layup cut the deficit to seven less than a minute later. Sophomore Alex Schachne pushed the lead back to double digits with a bucket from downtown, but it was answered by a Caleb Johnson jumper. Senior Harry O'Neil then hit a pair of free throws to spark a 16-4 run that put Hopkins on top 41-21 at the 1:43-mark. Five different players scored during the run that spanned seven minutes. Colbert scored five straight points to end the half for the Green Terror, making it a 41-26 game at the break.

Wallace and Kaelen Kanealey opened the second with back-to-back buckets and the Blue Jays' lead was down to 11. Quarry and O'Neil responded with buckets in the paint to put JHU up 45-30, but McDaniel answered with a quick five-point burst to pull back within 10. Freshman Carson James and Quarry combined for an 8-2 run that pushed the lead back to 16 with 11:49 to play.

The Green Terror made one more push got to within 10 of the Blue Jays with 7:20 to play. But that's as close as they would get. Kern drained a three from the corner to ignite a quick 9-2 run that ballooned the lead to 17 at the 3:39-mark. McDaniel would get no closer than 13 in the final 90 seconds as Hopkins secured the win.
