PITMAN, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Senior power forward Sam Toney, New Jersey City University's two-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year and two-time All-American, has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season after a record-breaking week in which he moved into fifth place in school history in scoring and became the Gothic Knights' all-time leader in three-point field goals. The honor is for week 12 of the 2019-20 season for games played January 20-26.

Toney, the D3News Preseason National Player of the Year and a D3hoops.com Second-Team Preseason All-America pick, takes home NJAC Player of the Week honors for the sixth time in the last three seasons. This year he previously collected the honor in week seven on December 23.

Toney had his best week of the season, leading NJCU to a pair of NJAC victories—its second and third in a row—to get to 6-5 in the league—just a game back of third place and just two games out of first. He is now tied for seventh place in the history of the NJAC in three-point baskets.

He averaged 20.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game with huge shooting percentages—54.2 percent from the field (13-24), 52.9 percent from three-point distance (9-17) and 71.4 percent from the line (5-7).

In an 88-84 road win over Kean on January 22, Toney moved into the top five in school history with 1,603 points, passing NJCU Hall-of-Famer Mark Washington (2002-06, 1600 points). Toney tallied 13 points, shooting 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point land with five rebounds, three assists and one block.

On January 25 in a rematch of the 2019 NJAC championship game, Toney led NJCU over Rowan, 81-79. Toney became the new all-time leader in three-point field goals in NJCU men's and women's basketball history as he registered his 25th career double-double. Toney entered the day tied with former All-American Dana John (209-580, 2005-08) for the all-time lead, but needed just 10 seconds to stand alone, drilling a triple from the left arc on the first possession of the game.

Toney scored a season-high 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-12 three-point success, grabbing 12 rebounds in 36 minutes. When Rowan intentionally missed a free throw with 2.9 seconds left with 2.9 seconds left, Toney grabbed a defensive rebound to seal the game. NJCU jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead behind three three-pointers from Toney in the first 2:48 of the game. NJCU opened the second half the way it started the first—with Toney burying two threes in the first minute. Toney scored at least 20 points in a game for the 33rd time in his career and fifth time this season. Toney reached double figures in rebounds for the 26th time in his career. Toney had his highest scoring total since netting 31 at Stockton on February 2, 2019.

Toney is in fifth place in school history in scoring with 1,630 points. He is 76 points shy of matching Hall-of-Famer Steve Wilder who scored 1,706 points from 1982-86. Toney has an NJCU record 215 career three pointers. He scored in double figures for the 80th and 81st time in 102 career games.

In the most recent NJAC statistical leaders, he is ninth in the league in scoring (14.9) and ninth in rebounding (6.1). Additionally, he is eighth in three-pointers per game (2.2), 10th in blocked shots (0.8 per game), 11th in offensive rebounding (1.8/game), 13th in defensive rebounding (4.3 per game),15th in free throw percentage (.714), 16th in three-point percentage (.358) and 20th in steals (1.2)

NJCU has now collected five weekly awards in the last six weeks. NJCU swept the league awards on December 23 in week seven, when Sam Toney was named NJAC Player of the Week and Michael Clement was Rookie of the Week. The following week, senior small forward Jaimik Moore was named NJAC Player of the Week and later selected to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week. Freshman shooting guard Nizair Scott was NJAC Rookie of the Week on January 13 (week 10).
