Bledsoe sparks St. Olaf's second-half comeback at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior Dominic Bledsoe matched his career high with 24 points as the St. Olaf College men's basketball team rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to top Macalester College, 75-60, on the road on Saturday afternoon at Leonard Center.

Macalester (5-10, 2-8 MIAC) shot 63.3 percent from the field in the opening half to claim a 35-28 halftime lead, but St. Olaf (7-8, 4-6 MIAC) limited the Scots to four made field goals in the second half to snap a four-game losing streak. The victory was the 24th in the last 25 meetings in the series for the Oles.

Bledsoe shot 10-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-5 from behind the arc, on his way to tying his career high with 24 points. Playing in his hometown, the St. Paul native also scored 24 points in a 79-54 win at Macalester last season on Dec. 1, 2018.

After trailing by seven at the half, the Oles started the second half on a 7-0 run over the first three minutes to tie the game at 35-35. With the Scots leading 40-38 with 15:53 to go, St. Olaf scored 30 of the game's next 40 points, holding Macalester to one made field goal in a 10-minute stretch, to open up a comfortable 68-50 lead with 5:57 remaining.

The Oles shot 51.4 percent (19-for-37) from the field in the second half and went 7-for-14 (50.0 percent) from three-point range after the break. The Scots shot just 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) from the floor in the final 20 minutes, scoring 15 of their 25 second-half points at the free-throw line.

St. Olaf committed just three turnovers in the game, its lowest total since turning the ball over just three times in a 77-61 victory at Linfield on Nov. 29, 2014. The Oles also forced a season-high-tying 21 turnovers and held a 26-2 advantage in points off turnovers in the win.

Dominic Bledsoe scored five of his nine first-half points in the opening 4:04 of the game to help St. Olaf to an early 9-4 lead. After trailing by as many as six early, Macalester hit three consecutive three-pointers midway through the half to take the lead and led by seven on two occasions.

The Oles cut a 26-19 deficit to two, 28-26, after three-pointers by Noah Beck and Nate Albers, but the Scots closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a seven-point lead into the locker room. Macalester shot 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the field and 60.0 percent (6-for-10) from behind the arc in the half, while enjoying a 21-3 advantage in bench points.

Senior Noah Beck scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half for St. Olaf while adding seven rebounds and three assists in the game. Senior Nate Albers contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Oles held Jackson Henningfield, the fifth-leading scorer in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), to 12 points on the afternoon. Tyler McFarland scored a team-high 15 points off the bench for the Scots, whose reserves outscored their starters by a 33-27 margin in the game.

St. Olaf hosts Concordia-Moorhead on Monday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at Skoglund Center.
