BW Men's Basketball Defeats Capital

BEREA, Ohio – In the first game of the new year, the Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team defeated Capital University 60-47, in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (7-4, 3-1 OAC) was led by junior guard Luke Schaefer (Medina) who poured in 12 points and registered two steals. Senior guard Zach Cebula (Brunswick) chipped in eight off 2-of-4 from long range. Senior forward Drew Sova (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) recorded seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior forward Alex Nahra (Mayfield) snagged a game-high eight rebounds and threw in six points.

Capital (6-5, 2-2 OAC) was led by senior forward Ganiyu Yahaya scored 14 points and junior center Joe Hartmann tallied 11.

BW improves to 53-59 in the all-time series with Capital. In the last year's matchup between these two, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Crusaders in the OAC Semifinals, 81-67.

Capital opened the game with a 13-8 run over the first nine minutes and fifty seconds. BW took a 21-16 advantage at 5:39 with a 13-3 run that included all of Schaefer's nine first half points. The Yellow Jackets closed out the first half with a 6-4 run and headed into the locker room up 27-20.

BW established its first double-digit lead of 30-20 with a Schaefer three to start the second half. The Crusaders responded with a 10-6 spurt to trim the lead to 36-30 at 12:52. The Yellow Jackets answered with 14 unanswered points, to take a 50-30 advantage with 9:13 left in the second half. Capital cut the lead to 55-45 at 4:24 with a 15-5 run. BW held off the Crusaders and walked away with the 60-47 conference victory.
