More news about: Emory

Guilford College junior Jaylen Gore's buzzer-beating three-point shot enabled the Quakers to post a come-from-behind win at No. 2-ranked Emory on Saturday in the finale of the Eagles' Holiday Classic.  Guilford boosted its record to 10-2 following a 70-69 decision over the Emory who suffered its first setback in 11 outings.

Emory held a nine-point lead, 57-48, with 6:17 left in the contest following a three-pointer by junior Matt Schner.  Guilford then made the most of three Emory turnovers and a missed field goal to score seven straight points, narrowing the gap to 57-55 with 4:19 remaining.  Holding a 59-57 advantage, the Eagles' Nick Stuck drained a three-pointer from the corner with 2:30 left to up the count to 62-57.   A pair of free throws by Schner allowed Emory to maintain a 64-59 lead, but the Quakers' Tyler Dearman sliced their deficit to three points after connecting from distance with 90 ticks left on the clock.  A bucket by Stuck kept Emory ahead, 66-62, but Dearman's fifth triple of the day with 47 seconds remaining drew Guilford to within one point.  The Quakers got a defensive stop on the ensuing Emory possession that led to a layup by Kyler Gregory with 14 seconds remaining, giving the visitors a 67-66 advantage.  Romin Williams responded with a clutch step-back three from the top of the key with 3.4 seconds remaining which enabled Emory to reclaim the lead at 69-67.  Gore then received the inbounds and raced down the right side of the court, putting up a runner from about 28 feet out that found the mark.

Schner and Williams led the Emory scoring attack with 16 points apiece. Lawrence Rowley and Stuck rounded out the double-figure scorers with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Rowley topped the Eagles' effort on the glass with nine rebounds while Stuck doled out six assists.

For the game, Emory was successful on 46.2 percent (24-of-52) of its field goal tries including 37.5 percent (12-of-32) from beyond the arc.  The Quakers finished at 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field, 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from three-point range.  Dearman led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, helping Guilford to a 37-30 edge in that category.

Emory returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, when it opens University Athletic Association play with a home date against the University of Rochester.
