Centenary Wins Fourth Straight with 104-95 Victory Over PSU Berks

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University men's basketball team opened up a seven-point halftime advantage en route to a 104-95 win over Penn State Berks on Saturday evening. Five Cyclones scored in double figures to help Centenary post its fourth straight win.

The Cyclones quickly jumped out to an 8-2 lead as graduate student Tom Weiler connected on a lay-up at 17:55.

Back-to-back buckets from sophomore Billy Veras pushed the home team's advantage to 15-2 with 16:25 showing on the clock.

Freshman D'Angelo Blackmond had a lay-up at 15:06 which extended Centenary's lead to 19-4.

A 6-0 run from PSU Berks pulled the visitors to within nine, 19-10 with 12:49 to go until the half. RJ Dixon and Hassan Koroma each had three points during that stretch.

Centenary responded by scoring seven of the next nine points and took a 26-12 lead with 10:41 showing on the clock.

A 9-3 run by the Nittany Lions made it a 29-20 game at 8:56.

Eleven straight points by the home team gave the Cyclones a 39-20 advantage with 6:05 left until the half. Junior Chris LaBelle scored five points during that run for Centenary.

The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes as a Weiler lay-up at 4:11 pushed the Centenary lead to 47-27. It was the Cyclones' largest lead of the contest.

The Cyclones and Nittany Lions continued to battle over the final four minutes as the Cyclones took a 57-50 lead at the half.

PSU Berks opened the second half on a 9-4 and cut the Centenary lead to two, 61-59 with 15:51 to go in the game.

The two sides traded points as the Cyclones led 66-64 with 13:56 showing on the clock.

A pair of triples from Weiler helped the Cyclones push their lead 76-67 with 11:45 to go.

Back-to-back three-pointers for the Nittany Lions cut the Centenary advantage to three, 78-75 with 9:17 left in the contest.

Leading by three, 83-80, the Cyclones ripped off a 9-2 run and took a 92-82 lead with 5:27 showing on the clock. LaBelle had five in that run while Blackmond tacked on four.

A triple from Blackmond pushed the Centenary advantage to 97-84 with 4:01 to play.

The two teams traded points over the final four minutes as the Cyclones secured the 104-95 win. It is the second time this season the Cyclones have broken the century mark (PSU Lehigh Valley-102).

Centenary shot 57.4 percent from the field, including a solid 68.8 percent in the first half. The Cyclones were 18-for-25 from the foul line. PSU Berks posted a 41.0 field goal percentage and knocked down 14 three-pointers. Centenary won the rebounding battle, 48-34.

LaBelle paced the Cyclones with 24 points in the game, his seventh game this season with 20 or more points scored. The junior was an impressive 12-for-12 from the foul line and added six rebounds and four assists in the game.

Blackmond came off the bench to contribute his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Weiler tossed in a season-high 17 points with five rebounds and three steals. Veras finished with 18 points and nine rebounds while senior Pablo Vasquez had 12 points.

Dixon led PSU Berks with 23 points and eight rebounds.

The Cyclones will be back in action when they travel to LIU for an exhibition game on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 4:30 p.m. Centenary then returns home on Monday, Dec. 30 to host Hunter at 4 p.m.
