No. 9 WashU Runs Past Fontbonne

St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 10, 2019 – The No. 9-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team used a 17-0 run midway through the first half to put away Fontbonne University early in an 86-44 victory Tuesday at Mabee Gymnasium.

WashU won its sixth-straight game to improve to 8-1, while Fontbonne suffered its second-consecutive loss and fell to 3-6.

Freshman Kevin Davet led the Bears with a career-high 16 points in the second half on 7-of-8 shooting, while junior Jack Nolan added 15 points on 3-of-6 three-point shooting. Senior DeVaughn Rucker chipped in with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting and sophomore Charlie Jacob added a season-best eight points off the bench.

WashU shot a season-best 60.7 percent (34-56) from the field, and hit 9-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Bears outrebounded Fontbonne 42-23 and had a season-high 23 assists.

The Bears opened the game by scoring the first seven points, and then a 17-0 run by WashU made it 30-6 with 6:01 to play. Jacob had all eight of his points in the run, including his first two three-pointers of the season. 

Nolan led the Bears with 13 points in the first half, and hit a fade away at the buzzer to make it 40-15 at the break. WashU shot 62.5 percent (14-24) in the opening half. The Bears limited Fontbonne to 25.9 percent (7-27), including 0-of-5 from three-point range.

WashU opened the second half on a 16-2 run to take the 56-17 lead. Rucker had eight of the first 10 points for WashU, and Hardy added a thunderous one-handed dunk.

Elijah Rice led Fontbonne with seven points. The Griffins shot 31.1 percent (31-61) from the field and hit just 4-of-20 from three-point range.

WashU has eight days off before returning to action on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Illinois Wesleyan University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.
