Collins Hits 1,500 as Drew Downs King's

MADISON, N.J. - Senior guard Riley Collins scored his 1,500th career point in the first half, then poured in 14 points in the second period to lead the Drew to an 87-67 non-conference victory over King's Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Collins, who also dished out eight assists, becomes just the sixth 1,500-point scorer in program history, and he now ranks fifth all-time at Drew with 1,514 points.

The Rangers (5-1) broke the game open early in the second half with a 20-3 run that included eight points from Collins. 

Eighteen Rangers saw action, with 13 finding the scoring column. Freshman forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. (eight points, 11 rebounds), junior forward Malachi Walker, Jr. (nine points, five rebounds, four blocks), and senior guard Michael Boice (nine points, six rebounds, four assists, four steals) all posted solid all-around performances. In addition, junior guard Miles Lewis (11 points) and sophomore guard David Gervase (10 points) each scored in double figures off the bench.

Bryan Henderson scored a game-high 20 points for the Monarchs (5-3).

Drew led by as much as 14 in the opening half, only to see King's close the period on a 7-0 spurt to make it a 34-30 game at the half. McBurnie grabbed nine of his rebounds in the stanza.

The Monarchs came all the way back to take the lead (43-40) with 16:20 left. But that's when the Rangers embarked on their decisive run, which included four 3-pointers. After a Boice lay-up, Gervase knocked a pair of triples less than two minutes apart, making it 50-46 as the home crowd brought the noise. McBurnie added four points during the stretch while Collins scored six of the final eight points of the run with a pair of trifectas as the Rangers lead swelled to 60-46. 

Drew continued to dial long distance as it put the game away, hitting five 3-pointers over a four-minute stretch. Dunks from Gervase and Lewis and an emphatic blocked shot from Walker also highlighted an exciting second half the saw the Rangers score 53 points.

The Blue and Green held a 51-49 rebounding edge and forced King's into 22 turnovers. 

The Rangers play their Landmark Conference opener on Saturday, when they visit Catholic University at 2 p.m. in their first road game of the season.
