Second Half Surge Propels Men’s Basketball Over Kenyon

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team erupted for 49 second-half points and had three scorers with at least 15 points in a 73-55 win over Kenyon at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
 
W&J rises to 4-1 with the victory as Kenyon falls to 1-2.
 
Cameron Seemann (Loveland, Ohio/Archbisohp Moeller), Primo Zini (Morgantown, W.Va./Trinity Christian) and Jacob Davenport (Camberley, England/Charnwood College) all established new season-highs with Seemann notching 18 points, Zini adding 16 and Davenport pouring in a career-best 15.  
 
W&J held a slight 24-22 edge at halftime with only four made field goals before shooting 64.3% (18-of-28) in the second half to overpower Kenyon 49-33 in the second half.
 
Kenyon scored five-straight points early in the second half to take a 27-26 lead with 18:11 to play in the second half. The Presidents and Lords were tied at 29 and 31 before a 10-2 run that included threes from Davenport and Seemann put W&J ahead for good.
 
The Presidents used an 11-3 spurt to turn 50-41 lead into a 59-44 after consecutive layups from Seemann and a five-point burst from AJ Blue (Kensington, Md./Sidwell Friends (D.C.).
 
Davenport put the game out of reach for good with threes on consecutive possession to push the Presidents' advantage to 65-47 with 4:21 to play. He finished the day a perfect four-of-four from the floor, four-of-four from three and three-of-three from the free throw line in 15 minutes of work.

Despite shooting 4-of-26 (15.4%) in the first half, W&J carried a two-point lead into the halftime break thanks to relentless efforts to attack the basket and get to the free throw line. The Presidents connected on 15-of-19 (78.9%) foul shots in the first half while Kenyon was 0-2 from the stripe in the game's first 20 minutes.
 
Over the game's first six minutes, Zini outscored Kenyon 7-4 with a jumper, layup and three free throws. Zini and Seemann worked their way to the free throw line eight times apiece in the first half with each connecting on seven foul shots.
 
Despite W&J holding a plus-15 edge from the free throw line in the first half, Kenyon was plus-nine from deep with four three-point makes compared to one for the Presidents. The Lords buried two threes in the final 2:45 of the half to cut 22-16 deficit to a 24-22 score at the halftime break.
 
W&J committed a season-low 14 turnovers while forcing the Lords into 18 and holding a plus-11 edge in points off turnovers. The Presidents registered a season-high 27 free throw attempts, connecting on 22 (81.5%).
 
Nicholas Campalong filled the stats sheet with six points, eight rebounds, four steals and four blocks. Blue finished with five points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
 
W&J continues non-conference play on Saturday as the Presidents host Hiram at 3:00 p.m.
