Szilagyi's Hot Hand Seals The Deal In Scots' Second Half Finish

More news about: Gordon

Traveling to Salve Regina in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup tonight at the Rodgers Recreation Center, Gordon College Men's Basketball recorded its 15th win in a row by handing the Seahawks a 79-70 defeat. The Scots improve to 16-1 overall and 8-0 in CCC play, while the Seahawks fall to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in league action.

Noah Szilagyi spearheaded the win for the Scots, booking 20 points and four steals, Jake Haar put up 16 points, while David Massillon had a near double-double as he grabbed 11 rebounds and netted nine points in the victory.

The Seahawks were led by Mikey Spencer (Fr./Abington, Mass.) who had a game-high 25 points, while Jonathan Friberg (So./North Attleboro, Mass) was one rebound away from a double-double, netting 19 points and nine rebounds.

Both squads return back to the floor Saturday, January 19 as the Scots travel to Western New England while Salve visits Wentworth for a 3 p.m. start time.

How It Happened

  • Just over two minutes into the game, Eric Demers dished a pass to Parker Omslaer for a dunk to cap off a 10-2 run for the Scots.
  • Haar hit his second three-pointer of the half to give the Scots a 14-point lead with 11:48 remaining in the half. The next six minutes would be all Salve, as the Seahawks went on a 13-point run to crawl right back into it, trailing by one with 6:33 left.
  • Gordon retaliated by going on an eight-point run of their own, but not to be outdone, the Seahawks rallied back scoring nine unanswered points looking to take the lead heading into the half. However Josh Ribeiro hit a jumper with 17 seconds left in the first to regain the lead for the Scots, 36-35.
  • Salve went on a 7-0 run to open up the second frame and held the lead until a clutch Demers rattled in a three-pointer off of a fast break to take the 54-51 lead in favor of Gordon.
  • Szilagyi couldn't miss as he drained back-to-back three's to give the Scots a comfortable nine-point lead midway through the half.
  • Massillon netted six of his nine points with four minutes remaining, as the freshman made a name for himself down the stretch on both ends of the courts.
  • The Seahawks tried to foul to get the ball back but Haar went 4-4 from the line to seal the victory, 79-70.

Beyond The Box Score

  • David Massillon had a career night, grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds for the freshman.
  • Noah Szilagyi's magic number is four, as the senior has booked four steals three times this season.
  • Said Head Coach Tod Murphy: "The good news is we won the game. We are in a slump right now, but we are finding ways to win. Noah Szilagyi turned the game around in the second half with his defensive effort and his three-point shooting. I believe we are developing toughness, but I would like to get back to our free flowing offense that we displayed earlier in the season. We just need to keep striving to reach our potential each day in practice."
