CASTINE, Maine -- The University of New England men's basketball team scored 14 unanswered points in a span of 2:15 during the 1st half to separate from Maine Maritime Academy on the way to a 114-101 triumph on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 30) at Smith Gymnasium.
After turning an early 8-4 deficit into a 35-27 cushion at the midway mark of the initial period, the Nor'easters blew things open (49-27) with the spurt that was keyed by five points from Ryan Beatty. UNE held a 66-51 lead at the break, shooting 54 percent from the field and knocking down 11-of-22 from deep.
The difference never dipped below 12 (72-60) in the 2nd frame.
Alex Kravchuk topped the Nor'easters (3-8) with 21 points, which included 4-of-6 accuracy from long range. Avery DeBrito hit all three of his attempts from behind the arc as part of a 7-for-9 effort from the floor that produced 17 points. Drew Muniz put in 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Beatty tossed in 13 points, with 10 prior to halftime.
Even though the Mariners (5-4) finished with the better overall field-goal percentage of 52 percent, UNE (46%) out-scored the hosts by seven on three-pointers (17-10) and by eight at the free throw line (19-11).
Drew Patno shared the team-high of eight boards, helping the Nor'easters post a 45-40 edge on the glass. Jordan Bagshaw supported the visitors with eight points, and both Steven Celmins and DeMarquez Hadnot chipped in with seven.
For MMA, Adam Richardson registered a double-double with game-bests of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Kimani Anderson poured in all of his 20 points before the intermission, and fouled out with 13 minutes remaining. Nicholas DePatsy contributed 14 points, eight caroms, and six assists. Riley Jorgenson and Colby Furrow went for 14 and 10 points, respectively.
