Cabrini Junior Tyheim Monroe Joins 1,000 Point Club in 89-82 Win over Montclair State

BETHLEHEM, PA – Junior men's basketball student-athlete Tyheim Monroe joined an exclusive club tonight, as the Cabrini men's basketball team to an 89-82 win over Montclair State in the first game of the 37th Roosevelt's Greyhound Classic at Moravian College.

With a three point with 1:22 left in the first half, Monroe became the 19th player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point plateau, achieving the feat in just 61 games.

Monroe shot 7-10 from the field and 12-16 from the free throw line, en route to 26 points and 12 rebounds for his 36th consecutive double-double.

The junior paced a balanced attack that included six players with at least eight points.  Fellow junior Deryl Bagwell hit three of his four three point attempts for 17 points, while senior Ryan Charity added 15 points off the bench.

After building an early nine point lead on a three pointer by junior Joe Mostardi, Cabrini fought off a game Red Hawks club that shot north of 60% from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Monroe and Bagwell combined for 26 first half points, as the Blue and White connected on 16-32 from the field in the first half, including 6-14 from three point range, to build a 49-46 halftime lead.

Cabrini created some breathing room early in the second half, as it used a 10-0 spurt to build a 63-48 lead with 14 minutes to play.

The Cavaliers led by as many as 17 points midway through the stanza and owned a seemingly comfortable 80-64 lead on Charity's free throw with 5:30 to play.

Montclair State would not give in, as it scored the next eight points. A Bagwell triple stopped the Red Hawks' run, pushing the Blue and White lead back to double digits at 83-72.

Despite recording eight of its 19 turnovers in the final three minutes, the Cavaliers were able to seal the win at the free throw line, connecting on 6-8 from the charity stripe in the final minutes.

Junior DeVahnte Mosley chipped in with 10 points off the bench, while Mostardi drained three three pointers for nine points. Sophomore Ivan Robinson added eight points and five assists. Classmate Kwame Dokes secured six boards.

Brandon Channer led Montclair State (5-6) with 32 points and seven boards, while Daniel Ramis added 12 points off the bench.  

The Cavaliers (6-3) will close the two-day event on Saturday, as it faces the host Moravian (8-3) at 5:30pm.
