Hood Stops Chatham to Advance to Championship of Rotary of Frederick Holiday Classic

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College men's basketball team dispatched Chatham, 78-60, in the first round of the Fourth Annual Rotary of Frederick Holiday Classic.

With the win, the Blazers advance to face Stockton in the championship game on December 20 at 3 p.m. Chatham will take on Gettysburg in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

For Hood, Jared Ruiz (Frederick, Md. / Oakdale) went 4-of-7 from 3-point range on his way to 16 points. Davon Hill(Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) added 14 points and three assists. He went 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Ian Eversull(Ijamsville, Md. / Urbana) had a game-high eight rebounds. Malik Harris (Columbia, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) grabbed seven boards off the bench. 

Alex Schoppen had 11 points in the first eight minutes as the Cougars jumped out to an early 17-12 lead. Hood scored the next seven points, five by Dominic Espeleta (Waldorf, Md. / Westlake), to take a 19-17 lead. Another three by Schoppen put Chatham up 22-21 with 5:31 on the clock in the half, but Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) answered with his only 3-pointer of the evening to put the Blazers ahead 24-22. A lay up by Espeleta with 21 seconds to go gave Hood a 40-31 edge at halftime. 

Magnuski scored on Hood's first possession of the second half and the Cougars would only get within 10 on one occasion over the remainder of the game. 

Schoppen hit 8-of-13 field goals, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, on his way to a game-high 24 points. While he had the hot hand, the rest of the Cougars went just 11-of-46 shooting (24 percent) and 5-of-29 on threes (17 percent).

Hood, meanwhile, went 8-of-17 from 3-point range (47 percent) and shot 51 percent overall (24-of-47). The Blazers held a 42-30 advantage on the glass and went 22-of-29 from the free throw line (76 percent). Hood's bench outscored the Cougars' 25-6.


Stockton 68, Gettysburg 57

Armin Cane had 20 points and four threes to lead the Ospreys to the championship game. Jaymere Hadden had 17 points and five steals.

Cam Stewart paced the Bullets with 15 points and Matt England added 11. Kevin Gladstone grabbed nine rebounds and tallied six assists.

Stockton shot 53 percent from the field and had 25 points off turnovers.

Pete Christ gave Gettysburg a 42-38 lead with 17:24 remaining, but a 23-5 run by the Ospreys was too much to overcome.
