Providence, R.I. – Junior Tom Garrick (Seekonk, Mass.) scored a game-high 24 points and added five rebounds and three steals to propel the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team to a 62-52 victory against Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Jarell Lawson (Providence, R.I.) added 10 points and five rebounds for JWU while junior Robert Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) had a team-best eight rebounds, four points and three assists in the victory for the Wildcats.

Junior Pat Marchand (Cranston, R.I.) led the way for Lasell with a double-double, scoring 17 points with 13 rebounds while junior Pedro Pabon (Queens, N.Y.) had a team-best 18 points and four boards in the loss for the Lasers.

The two teams traded leads early with Lasell holding an 11-10 advantage after a layup by Marchand with 12:46 left in the first half.  The Wildcats then went on a 16-5 run, capped by jumper by Garrick to take their first double-digit lead at 26-16 with 5:39 remaining in the stanza.  JWU had the 36-22 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Wildcats continued to build on their lead in the early stages of the second half and led by 17 points after a pair of free throws by Garrick made the score 44-27 with 17:03 on the clock.  The Lasers responded, however and cut the lead to just seven when a free throw by Pabon put the game at 57-50 with under a minute remaining.  That would be as close as Lasell would get, however as JWU held on for the 62-52 victory.  Johnson & Wales forced Lasell into 20 turnovers and held the Lasers to 37.7 percent (20-for-53) from the field.

With the victory Johnson & Wales improves to 5-2 for the season and 2-1 in the GNAC while Lasell drops to 2-5 on the year and 1-2 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, December 9th when they host intra-state rival Rhode Island College in a non-conference contest starting at 7:30 p.m.
