Warriors defeat Bison in non-conference action, 80-56

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior captain Matt Langadas (Sebago, Maine) scored 13 points in an 80-56 loss at Eastern Connecticut State Wednesday night in non-conference men's basketball action.

Junior captain Irving Eggleston (East Lyme, Conn.) added 12 points while classmate Gustave Koumare (Harlem, N.Y.) tallied eight points and six steals. Senior captain Joe Gallant (Salem, N.H.) registered six points, seven boards and one block as the Bison slipped to 1-2 on the season.

The Warriors (3-0) outrebounded Nichols 42-27 and shot 52 percent from the field while holding the Bison to 36 percent shooting.  Junior guard Kevin Leumene (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman guard Tarchee Brown (Manchester) combined for 51 points for ECSU.

In the first half, Leumene sank nine of 10 field goals and scored 23 of the team's 44 points en route to a career-high 31 points, while Brown followed with game totals of 20 points WITH seven of his points coming on nine free throw attempts.

After Nichols connected on the first basket of the game, Eastern answered with the next 12 points – six by Leumene – and the Warriors were never trailed. The Warriors limited the Bison to 26.7 percent shooting from the floor – sinking 55.2 percent of their own shots – in building a 26-point, 44-18 halftime lead.

In the game, Leumene was 12-for-17 from the floor (including 3-for-4 from three-point range) and 4-for-5 from the foul line. He added three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 30 minutes. Sophomore forward Hugh Lindo (Enfield, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 12 and also blocked four shots. Freshman guard Collin Jordan (Cheshire, Conn.) contributed five points, six rebounds and five assists in 25 minutes.

In the second half, Nichols scored 13 points off turnovers but only twice was able to cut the deficit under 20 points. The Bison missed 20-of-23 three-point field goals. 

Nichols hosts Lasell Saturday at 1 p.m. The Warriors play at Hartwick Friday at 8 p.m.
