WALTHAM, Mass. — Six Brandeis University men's basketball seniors accounted for 87 of the team's 92 points as the Judges closed out their season with a 92-53 rout of rival New York University in the University Athletic Association regular-season finale. Brandeis ends its season at 13-12, 5-9 and sixth-place in the UAA. NYU drops to 16-9, 6-8 and tied for fourth in the UAA.
Three different seniors scored 20 points in their final game in a Judges' uniform. Guard Derek Retos (No. Attleboro, Mass./Brimmer and May School) led the charge with 23 points, hitting 8-of-13 overall and 7-of-11 from 3-point range, bringing his school-record career total to 231. It was his fifth career game with seven or more trifectas. As a team, Brandeis hit 14 total threes at a 48 percent clip. They also connected on 55 percent from the field overall for the game (34-62).
Forward Alex Stoyle (Goffstown, N.H./Tilton Acad.) and guard Ben Bartoldus (Hillsborough, N.H./Proctor Acad.) were just behind Retos with 21 points each. Stoyle missed just one shot on the day, hitting 8-of-9 overall, 3-of-3 from downtown and 2-of-2 from the line to finish with a season-high and his third career 20-point game. Bartoldus was nearly as effective, hitting 7-of-9 from the floor, 2-of-4 from deep and 5-of-5 from the line. His 21 points moved Bartoldus into 26th place on the Judges' career scoring list with 1,051 points, just ahead of Stuart Paris '64 (1,048).
Also contributing from the Class of 2014 was guard Gabriel Moton (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg), who almost had a double-double with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds; guard Ruben Kanya (Ottawa, Ont./Bridgton Acad., Maine) added seven points and four assists – tied with Bartoldus for game-high; and center Youri Dascy (Fall River, Mass./St. Andrews School, R.I.), who had six points.
NYU had one player score in double figures, as sophomore Evan Kupferberg (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) had 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. Classmate Max Ralby (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's School) led the Violets with three assists.
The Judges picked up their largest-ever win in 57 meetings with the Violets. It was their third-largest point total in the series and most scored under head coach Brian Meehan. Brandeis never trailed in the contest, opening the game on an 11-2 run thanks to two trifectas from Retos and another by Stoyle. Brandeis had still doubled up the Violets as the team's neared the midway point of the first, 25-12, after Bartoldus connected from downtown at 10:23. NYU got as close as six points at 29-23 after junior Iyoha Agho (New City, N.Y./St, Joseph Regional) hit four-straight free throws as a results of two technical on the Judges at the 5:44 mark.
After those technical, Brandeis closed the first half on an 18-7 run, taking a 47-30 lead into the locker room on a late Moton 3-pointer. The Judges then stormed out of the second half on a 19-5 string to push the lead to 31 points at 66-35 with less than five minutes elapsed, the game was never in question from there.
