JWU Men's Basketball Falls To No. 15 Albertus Magnus, 96-81

Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball squad dropped a 96-81 decision against No. 15 Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Tuesday evening.

 

Senior Esaie Touze (Providence, R.I.) paced Johnson & Wales with 21 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore Quarry Greenaway (Westchester, N.Y.) also had 21 points with four boards for the Wildcats.  Sophomore Tom Garrick (Seekonk, Mass.) had 12 points and three rebounds while sophomore Robert Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) was also in double-figures with 10 points and seven boards in the setback.

 

Albertus Magnus was led by junior Victor Ljuljdjuraj (Bronx, N.Y.) who tallied a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds while senior Darius Watson (New Britain, Conn.) added 19 points in the victory.  Junior Eian Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had nine points, six boards and 14 assists for the Falcons.

 

Johnson & Wales raced out to the early 12-5 lead after a three-pointer by senior Matt Barboza (Riverside, R.I.) at the 15:53 mark of the first half.  Albertus Magnus then used a 10-2 run over the next two minutes to take the 15-14 advantage on a pair of free throws by sophomore James Jennings (Straftord, Conn.) with 14:38 left in the half.  With the score tied 22-22 midway through the stanza, the Wildcats then used an 8-2 run for the 30-24 lead with 8:40 remaining on the clock after a free throw by Touze.  JWU led by as many as six points several times late in the half, including 44-38 with 3:32 on the clock.  The Falcons rallied to close out the stanza with an 11-6 run with JWU taking the 50-49 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. Touze had a double-double in the first half with 14 points and 11 rebounds while JWU held a 25-15 advantage in rebounds for the stanza.

 

Albertus Magnus controlled the action out of the gate in the second half and took its first double-digit lead of the game, 66-56 on a three-pointer by Ljuljdjuraj with 13:42 left in the contest.  The Falcons pushed the lead to 82-65 on a jumper by Davis with just under seven minutes left.  Albertus Magnus then cruised to the 96-81 victory.  The Falcons shot 56.5% (35-for-62) in the win while Johnson & Wales shot 42.9% (27-for-63) in the setback.

 

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 18-6 overall and 14-3 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus improves to 22-2 overall and 16-1 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February 22nd when they travel to Mount Ida for a GNAC contest at 3:00 p.m.
