PITTSBURGH, PA- Carnegie Mellon University used a quick start and its long range shooting en route to a 73-62 win over the University of Rochester men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at CMU's Skibo Gymnasium.

The Tartans (11-11, 4-7 UAA), got off to a hot shooting start, hitting four 3-pointers in the first four and a half minutes to build an early 14-4 lead.  Carnegie was led by freshman Jack Serbin who hit three trey's.  He would finish with 14 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season

Rochester (8-14, 2-9 UAA) would battle back with a 12-4 spurt to cut the Tartan lead to just two at 18-16 behind strong play from junior Tyler Sankes and senior Nate Vernon.  Sankes, playing his first game off the bench this season finished with a team high 16 points and kept UR in the game during the first half.  Vernon ended with 10 points on the day.

Carnegie Mellon would capitalize on UR's poor shooting in the first half to build the lead back to double-digits with 4:30 left in the first half.  The Tartans would head into the locker room with a seven point lead at 39-32.

CMU would then hold UR at bay early in the second half, keeping a comfortable margin on the scoreboard.  The Tartans then used a 12-3 run to build their biggest margin of the game, leading by 15 with 13 minutes left on the clock.

The Yellowjackets would eventually cut the lead back down into single digits with treys from Mack Montague and Kevin Sheehy, but CMU had an answer on the offensive end, making big buckets and its free throws down the stretch to thwart the comeback attempt.  Montague finished with 15 points and five boards for UR.

The Tartans were led in scoring by Seth Cordts who ended with 19 points and went 9-10 from the charity stripe.  Rob Mohen also had a solid game inside with 13 points and seven boards for CMU.

For the game, UR shot 40% (23-57) from the floor compared to Carnegie Mellon's 39% (22-57).  On the glass, Carnegie Mellon held a big edge, grabbing 43 boards (13 offensive) to UR's 31.  Rochester made 6 of 20 three's, all coming in the second half while the Tartans made 11 shots from behind the arc in the game.

The loss is Rochester's 10th away from home this season, the most since the 1974-75 season.  The 14 overall defeats are the most for a UR team since 1992-93.

UR returns to the Palestra for its final three games of the year hosting Brandeis and NYU next weekend on Friday night and Sunday afternoon.
