Hot shooting fuels another Tommie playoff title victory

Senior Will DeBerg scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers in a 9:03 mid-game span, as the top-seeded Tommies cruised to a 92-65 win over third-seed Augsburg in Sunday afternoon's MIAC men's basketball championship game at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

No. 1-ranked St. Thomas (26-1) won the conference playoff crown for the seventh time in the last eight years and 12th time overall. The 92 points tied a playofff championship game record set in 2001 by St. John's, and the 27-point margin also was a record for the title game.

Dan Kornbaum had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Andy Seidlitz had 13 points and eight assists for the Auggies (21-7), who will await Monday's bracket announcement to see if they make the 62-field as an at-large team. Augsburg was playing its fourth game in nine days including Friday's eight-hour round trip trek to and from Moorhead.

Senior Tommy Hannon had a game-high 22 points and became the 30th Tommie to surpass 1,000 career points.

St. Thomas shot 58 percent from the field, had only eight turnovers and made 12 3-pointers. The Toms outrebounded Augsburg 35-25 as they imporved to 14-0 at home this season.

Augsburg, playing in the championship game for just the second time in program history, used a 17-7 run to buld a five-point lead late in the first half.

UST countered later with a 9-0 run over the last 1:38 of the first half to take a 41-35 halftime lead. DeBerg, Zach Riedeman and Erik Tengwall each nailed a 3-pointer in the game-turning run. St. Thomas used a 17-4 run in a 4:00 span early in the second half to build the lead to 17 points.
