Transy tops Earlham, sets up showdown with Rose-Hulman

RICHMOND, Ind. – No. 22 Transylvania got 19 points from Barrett Meyer and 17 from Parker StansberryWednesday to overpower outmanned Earlham 82-45  in Heartland Conference men's basketball play.
 
The Pioneers are 16-4, 11-2 HCAC, while the Quakers are 2-18, 1-12 in the league. Earlham has lost seven games in a row while the Pioneers have won six straight heading into Saturday's conference showdown with No. 23 Rose-Hulman.
 
Transy never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 41 points in the late going. The Pioneers were hot from three-point range, canning 12 of 24, led by a five-for-five effort by Meyer and a three-of-five showing by Stansberry, who missed his career scoring high by two points.
 
 
Brandon Rash was seven of nine from the field and scored 15 points. He moved past Transy head coachBrian Lane into 25th place on the school's all-time scoring list. He now has 1,287 points.
 
Ethan Spurlin contributed 11 points and five rebounds. Taylor Botkin came off the bench to score four points and grab a game-high nine rebounds. Ten of the 14 Pioneers who saw action hit the scoring column.
 
Blake Welch and Dustin Rusk each scored 10 points to top Earlham. Transy shot 52 percent from the field while holding the Quakers to 28 percent. The home team was just five of 24 from behind the arc.
 
Transy canned seven of 11 three-pointers in the first half on the way to a 42-21 edge at the break. Meyer led the way with 13 points, including three of three from long range. Spurlin added 11 points and Stansberry nine on three of five from behind the arc.
 
Transy shot 49 percent overall in the half to 33 percent for Earlham, which was led by Rusk, with seven points. The Quakers were three of 14 on triple tries.
 
Transy will return to the Beck Center to face No. 23 Rose-Hulman Saturday at 3 p.m. in a showdown for first place in the HCAC race. The Pioneers trail the Engineers by one game, but handed Rose-Hulman its only league loss earlier this year.
