MENOMONIE (January 26, 2013) - Stout had no trouble with non-conference opponent Ashford University, as they dominated the Saints from start to finish for a 60-35 win, Saturday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Chris Hortman (Sr, Milwaukee) scored 24 points to continue his hot scoring streak and Erik Olson (Sr, Buffalo) tied his career high with 11 assists as the Blue Devils (15-4) led the entire game.
Alex Oman's (Jr, Lake Elmo, Minn.) three-pointer to start the game started a 7-0 run that set the tone for the night. Ashford (16-7) got their first bucket more than six minutes into the game, but Stout pushed their lead to 12-2, midway through the half on another Oman three-pointer. The Saints made only one of their first 12 shots as they fell into the double-digit deficit.
Ashford worked their deficit back to five points with three and half minutes to play in the first half, but an 11-4 Stout run to end the half gave the Blue Devils a commanding 25-13 lead at the break. Oman led all scorers at halftime with nine points, while Hortman scored eight.
The second half was hardly different from the first, as Stout opened on a 9-2 run to virtually seal the victory. Following that run, Stout never led by less than 17.
Hortman did most of his damage in the second half, scoring 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Olson was also more effective after halftime, dishing out seven assists compared to four in the first half.
Stout will return to action, Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they host UW-Superior at 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse.
