No. 3-ranked Toms outlast Knights, get 10-0 start

The No. 3-ranked Tommies (10-0 overall, 5-0 MIAC) used an 8-0 run mid-second half to help stave off the stubborn Knights (5-4, 2-2), 78-69, in Wednesday night's men's basketball play at Schoenecker Arena. UST moved alone into the conference lead by one half game over idle Augsburg.

Junior Zach Riedeman scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half and led UST's 35-4 advantage in bench points. Tommy Hannon added 11 points and six rebounds and Noah Kaiser scored 10 points.

Ten different players scored for the Tommies, who shot 53% from the floor, had only 10 turnovers and posted a 33-24 rebounding edge.

Scott Thiesen had 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Tom Sawatzke had 21 points for the Knights, who converted only 36 percent in the final 20:00, including 1-of-7 from 3-point range.

Carleton led 37-35 at halftime after it shot 58 percent in the first half. The Knights were still within 58-54 with 9:00 to go before Hannon scored two baskets during an 8-0 run.

The Tommies are home Saturday to play unbeaten Augsburg (8-0, 4-0) in a 3 p.m. start in Schoenecker Arena.
