Sanders' 20 Points Leads RIC to a 65-52 Win at Johnson & Wales

Providence, R.I.-Junior guard Nyheem Sanders (Pawtucket, RI) scored a game-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds and five steals as Rhode Island College defeated Johnson & Wales, 65-52, on Wednesday evening at the Wildcat Center.

 

The Anchormen (8-2) snap a two-game losing streak with the win, while the Wildcats (4-5) drop to one game below .500.

 

 Sophomore forward Chris Burton (New Rochelle, NY) and senior guard Tahrike Carter (Brooklyn, NY) also scored in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Burton added four boards, three steals and three blocks. Carter posted six boards and three assists.

 

RIC shot 42 percent (27-for-65) from the field, 18 percent (3-for-17) from three-point land and 73 percent (8-for-11) from the free throw line. The Wildcats shot 37 percent (19-for-51) from the floor, 50 percent (6-for-12) from downtown and 67 percent (8-for-12) from the charity stripe.

 

The visitors dominated the glass, 39-27, and forced JWU into 25 turnovers.

 

Sophomore guard Frank Robinson (Providence, RI) scored 13 points to lead the Wildcats, while freshman guard Tom Garrick Jr. (Seekonk, MA) pitched in with 12.

 

The two teams traded leads early with JWU taking a 16-12 advantage on a layup by Garrick, Jr., with 10:27 left in the first half.  RIC responded with an 18-3 run and took their largest lead of the half on a layup by Sanders to make the score 30-19 with just under four minutes left in the stanza. The visiting Anchormen took the 32-28 lead into the locker room af halftime.

 

RIC extended its advantage in the beginning of the second half and took their largest lead of the game after a layup by Sanders put the Anchormen up 55-39 with 7:16 remaining on the clock.  RIC then held on for the win.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Wheaton on Thursday, Jan. 3 (7:30 p.m.).
