Tommies crank it up in second half, win 101-63

The No. 5-ranked Tommie men's basketball team unleashed a 62-point second half en route to a 101-63 win over St. Mary's in MIAC play Wednesday night in Winona.

Erik Tengwall and Conner Nord each scored 17 points for the Tommies (7-0 overall, 4-0 MIAC), who stayed in a share of the conference lead with Augsburg.

Coach John Tauer's Tommies improved to 5-0 in road games and pushed its season scoring average to 87.3.

It was the fourth victory in eight days.for UST, which shot 55 percent from the floor and helped forced 34 turnovers by St. Mary's. The Tommies had a 53-11 margin in bench scoring.

The Cardinals (0-6, 0-3) trailed only 35-33 late in the first half, but UST used a 4-0 run to end the half and an 11-0 run to start the second half to quickly push the lead to 50-33. Will DeBerg hit three 3-pointers to fuel that 11-0 run.

The Tommies are finished with conference games until Janaury, but play next Monday at Bethany Lutheran and Dec. 21 at home against ranked UW-Stevens Point.
