DC's Wolfrum Nets 34 in Last-Second Loss to Bobcats

MARIETTA, Ohio – Logan Wolfrum's sixth 30-point outburst of his career was not enough on Saturday, as the Defiance College men lost a back-and-forth affair to Frostburg State at the horn to close the 42-Annual Marietta Shrine Tournament in heart-breaking fashion and with a disappointing 0-2 clip.

Wolfrum buried 10-of-20 shots to end with 34 points and added a career-high 10 rebounds, five assists and one block for his third career double-double. The scoring total bumped the senior guard up three spots on DC's all-time scoring charts into 18th with 1,351 career points.

Wolfrum now has recent Yellow Jacket standouts, C.J. Johnson (2004-2008) and Nick Sales (2006-2010) in his crosshairs, needing to eclipse them before becoming the 16th DC player to join the 1,400-point club.

The Ayersville High product also inched closer to the top of Defiance's all-time assists list, using the five helpers to climb within 10 assists of Kirk Seemann (1986-1990) for the third-highest total in Defiance College history.

DC had three other players post double figures in the scoring column with Wolfrum, as Bernard Edwards had 12, while Travis Schomaeker scored 11 and Ryan Hicks ended with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Freshman center, Wade Wooley, matched Wolfrum with 10 rebounds to help Defiance maintain a 38-34 edge on the glass over Frostburg State.

Despite the slight edge in rebounding by Defiance, the Bobcats made the most of theirs by pulling down 14 offensive caroms and converting them into 13 second-chance points.

Frostburg State also capitalized on 15 turnovers from DC, netting 16 points off the costly Yellow Jacket miscues. The mistakes helped to squander a 39-32 halftime lead for Defiance, as 10 second-half turnovers turned into a decisive, 12-0, gap in points off of turnovers for the Bobcats.

DC's seven-point spread at the break matched the largest lead of the afternoon for either side and was equaled early in the second stanza by a 43-36 lead for the Purple and Gold at the 16:40 mark.

It would not hold however, as Frostburg State used a 16-8 rally to take its first lead since holding a 3-2 edge in the opening moments. The 52-51 Bobcat lead eventually opened up to 65-61 with 5:26 left in the contest.

A fast-break flush from Hicks, followed by a three-point play from Wolfum momentarily swung the lead back to the Jackets but another FSU spurt put Defiance in a 71-66 hole with 47 ticks left on the clock.

The Jackets charged back again, this time using back-to-back triples from Schomaeker and Wolfrum to knot the score at 72-72 with eight seconds to play, but Frostburg State made its last chance count by sinking a jumper at the horn for the 74-72 victory.

Defiance (0-2) will be back in action on Tuesday, when it plays at Ohio Northern in an 8:00 pm tip. DC's home opener at the new-look Karl H. Weaner Community Center is slated for November 28 against Alma at 8:00 pm.
