CONWAY, Ark. (Jan. 21) -- Hendrix College junior Ammon Martin scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists with no turnovers, setting the tempo in the Warriors dominating 72-55 win over conference foe Rhodes College on Friday night at Grove Gymnasium.
Martin scored five of the Warriors' first nine points and went 6-of-9 from the field in the first half. Hendrix (5-11, 1-7 SCAC) owned the paint in the first half, out-scoring Rhodes (4-12, 0-8 SCAC) 28-10 down low. The Warriors' lock down defense created an 8-0 advantage on the fast break after six steals in the opening 20 minutes.
Hendrix led the entire way and owned the advantage by at least nine points for over 29 minutes. Martin knocked down a last-second layup to end the first half with the Warriors on top, 38-23.
Martin found senior Dane Nielsen open on the wing for back-to-back 3-pointers just over 10 minutes left in regulation to give Hendrix a 56-39 lead. Junior Nick Heathscott's free throw with 6:07 left on the clock gave Hendrix its first 20-point lead of the night. The Warriors eventually stretched the gap to a game-high 22 points on a layup from Martin with 3:11 remaining.
Martin was 7-of-11 from the field, 1-of-2 from distance and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. He grabbed one offensive rebound and eight defensive boards. Martin also blocked one shot, snagged two steals and committed just one foul.
Junior Chris Goodman tallied 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from long range. Heathscott, Nielsen and first year Colton Primm all scored eight points, while senior James Ewing collected seven points and three assists.
First year Shane Watson and junior Kory Kilpatrick led Rhodes with 10 points apiece. Kilpatrick led the Lynx with seven rebounds. Sophomore Andrew Galow and sophomore Theo Hartwell both scored eight points.
The Warriors snapped a five-game skid with the victory and improve to 13-20 all-time against Rhodes. Hendrix will now host Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
