YORK, Pa.--The Hood College men's basketball team (8-6, 4-3 CAC) trimmed a 16-point deficit to just three late in the second half, but was unable to complete the comeback, falling 77-60 to Capital Athletic Conference nemesis York College (Pa.) (10-5, 4-2 CAC) Wednesday evening.
The Blazers found themselves in a 16-point hole (45-29) with 17:46 to play in the second half following a Jeremy Skoloda three-pointer. Hood mounted a tremendous rally and clawed its way back to within one possession of tying the score after Justin Stone put back a long range miss from Cameron Cook to make it 66-63 York with 1:10 to play.
The Spartans called a timeout to halt the Blazers' momentum and after Kevin Whaley misfired on a triple at the other end, Hood had the ball with a chance to tie it in the final minute. Tyler Snoots grabbed the board and the Blazers worked the ball around to Brenden Straughn, who was whistled for an offensive foul with 36 seconds left. York's Julian Watson knocked down both free throws to make it a five-point margin.
A three-point try by Reco Siler was off the mark on Hood's ensuing possession, and the Blazers were forced to foul after Whaley hauled in the carom. Both of Whaley's foul shots were true with 24 seconds to go, making it 70-63. A jumper by Cook was no good but Siler hustled for the offensive board and drained a three with seven seconds left to cut the deficit to four. Hood called a timeout, but was unable to get the ball back on the inbounds and the Spartans escaped with the victory.
The Spartans led by as many as 13 in the opening half and posted a 38-29 advantage at the break. YCP connected on nearly 50 percent of its shots compared to 39 percent by the Blazers.
Snoots amassed his ninth career double-double for the Blazers with 14 points and a game-high 13 boards. Stone finished with 13 points while Cook dropped in 11.
The Blazers next travel to Delaware Valley College Monday for a nonconference game at 6 p.m.
