November 15, 2010
Bristol, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team opened the 2010-11 season with a 63-53 loss against intra-state rival Roger Williams in a non-conference contest at the Campus Recreation Center on Monday night.
Johnson & Wales was led by junior Lamonte Thomas (Providence, R.I.) who tallied a game-high 25 points, four assists and added three rebounds. Fellow junior Calvin Jones (Providence, R.I.) added eight points and six boards in the setback for the Wildcats. Matt Clifford scored 16 points in the win for Roger Williams while Corey Fava notched 14 points, four caroms and four assists for the Hawks.
The two teams traded baskets early before Johnson & Wales used an 11-1 run, capped by a layup from Thomas, taking a 20-10 lead with 8:41 left on the clock. The Wildcats largest lead of the first half came with 5:36 remaining when a three pointer by Thomas put the squad up 28-15. Roger Williams responded, however and used a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 28-27 on a three-pointer by Gary Madison. JWU took the 30-28 lead into the locker room at halftime after 17 points by Thomas and 13 turnovers by Roger Williams.
Roger Williams opened the second half on a 15-4 run, capped by jumper by Pat Flanagan to take a 43-34 advantage with 14:58 remaining on the clock. JWU responded with a run of its own and closed the gap to just four points when a layup by senior Louis Ferreras (Providence, R.I.) cut the lead to 50-46 with 4:42 left in the contest. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as RWU finished the game on a 12-5 run en route to the 63-53 victory.
Johnson & Wales was held to just 34.4% shooting from the field, including 10.7% (3-for-28) from behind the three point stripe.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 0-1 while Roger Williams improves to 1-0 for the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, November 19th when they travel to the Lycoming Tip-Off Tournament. The Wildcats will take on Franciscan at 8:00 p.m.
