Tim Sweeney

Connecticut College hired Hobart head coach Tim Sweeney to lead its men's basketball program back to relevance in the NESCAC.

Director of Athletics Fran Shields announced the hire.

"We are very excited to welcome Tim Sweeney into our community," said Shields in the release. "We are confident that he can move our program in a positive direction with the goal of competing for NESCAC championships and NCAA berths."

Sweeney takes over a Camels program that has struggled to compete in the NESCAC. They were winless in the conference's single round-robin regular season the past two seasons and have made the eight-team conference tournament just twice since 2008.

He replaces Tom Satran who resigned midway through last season, which was his 16th at Conn College. He entered last season with a 155-224 career record. Dan Lee finished the season as the Camels' interim head coach.

Sweeney brings a record of success to New London as a coach and a player. He went 84-48 in five seasons at Hobart and led the Statesmen to their best season ever in 2017-18. Hobart went 21-5, 16-2 in the Liberty League but missed the NCAA Tournament after losing to Skidmore in the conference tournament semifinal.

Prior to that Sweeney spent time at Division I Davidson where he worked with Stephen Curry during the Wildcats run to the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 and Bucknell. He then spent four seasons as the associate head coach at Division I Elon.

Sweeney was a starting point guard at Rochester for four seasons and helped the Yellowjackets reach the NCAA Tournament semifinals in 2002. He was a four-time all-UAA honoree and team captain in his junior and senior season.

Sweeney's move leaves Hobart in search of a new head coach. The Statesmen went 17-11, 12-6 in the Liberty League.
