On Monday, Jan. 14, 2019, Calvin College accepted Chuck Winkelman's resignation from his position as head women's basketball coach, citing the lack of overall fit between the coach and the program.
"We feel this decision is in the best interest of the college, our student athletes, and Coach Winkelman," said Cheryl Brandsen, provost of Calvin College. "We ask that the media respect the privacy of our students during this time, and we note that we will make no further comments on this personnel matter."
Assistant coach Austin Randel will take over as interim head coach effective immediately.
Winkelman came to the Knights in the fall of 2016 after six years as head coach at Millsaps. Calvin was 46-24 in his two-plus seasons at the helm, but that included a 16-10 mark last season after a 22-6 start.
The Knights are currently 8-8, 3-4 in the MIAA, and have lost four of their last five games against Division III opponents. That includes a 50-38 home loss to archrival Hope on Saturday, Jan. 12.
Winkelman is the second MIAA women's basketball coach to lose his job in short order. Brittany Berry is now the interim women's basketball coach at Olivet after Zach Ingles was cut loose midseason. Trine coach Ryan Gould was replaced shortly before the season started as well.
