New Jersey City University senior point guard Marajiah Bacon became the 47th player in NCAA Division III history to reach the 2,000 point plateau and did so against her former school on Wednesday night in the Gothic Knights' 69-64 loss to Kean.
Bacon scored 27 points in the game, including the milestone basket midway through the second period. Bacon played three seasons at Kean where she scored 1,587 points for the Cougars before transferring to New Jersey City. Bacon led the nation in scoring as a freshman with 24.7 points per contest and was named the 2016 National Rookie of the Year.
Entering Wednesday Bacon ranked third among all Division III women's players in scoring (25.4 points per game) behind Nafisa Saunders of Neumann and Christina Kiser of Bard. Bacon is also first in the country in steals per game (4.94) and first in field goal attempts (425). The next closest player, Leah Calhoun of Mary Baldwin, has 337 attempts.
Bacon has a chance to become the all-time leading scorer in NJAC women's basketball history. She is 28 points shy of the record held by Michelle Jones of William Paterson (2,048 points). If Bacon scores her average on Saturday at Rowan, she would have a chance to break the record against William Paterson next Wednesday night.
