The College of Staten Island named Nicole Sarcone as its new head women's basketball coach, filling the vacancy created when Tim Shanahan stepped down in June.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to welcome Nicole Sarcone as the new head coach of women's basketball," said athletic director Charles Gomes in the release. "Her track record of success, her competitive drive to succeed and her vision for the program all made her the ideal candidate for this position."

Sarcone spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Staten Island Academy High School where she went 38-10. Before that she coached the junior varsity team at her alma mater Notre Dame Academy High School, which is also on Staten Island.

"I have treated all of my past teams as a college program so I feel I have been ready for this next step for a while," said Sarcone in the release. "Basketball is basketball at the end of the day and the high-level high school programs I have coached have really played a part in my coaching style and prepred me for the college level."

Sarcone played guard at SUNY New Paltz where she was a three-time all-conference selection, two-time team captain and the program's all-time career leader in assists. 

She replaces Tim Shanahan who stepped down from the position in June with a career record of 116-54 over 11 seasons. The Dolphins went 23-4, 15-1 in the CUNYAC last season and won the CUNYAC title with a 22-7 record in 2017.

"I plan to build off of the success this program has had in the past," said Sarcone. "We have a solid returning core and I don't see why this team can't become nationally and regionally recognized this season. My plan is to bring the CUNYAC title back to CSI."
