After losing its women's head basketball coach earlier this month, UW-Superior lost its men's coach when Paul Eberhardt resigned to pursue a job opportunity in the private sector. Greg Polkowski, who was a candidate for the position the last time it was vacant, will take over on an interim basis.

"I want to thank everyone at UW-Superior for the opportunities that I have been given. It was a very difficult decision to resign from coaching men's basketball, as I truly love my players, but ultimately spending more time with my family is just too important," Eberhardt said in the University's release.

He will remain in his part-time position as head men's golf coach.

Eberhardt was named UW-Superior's head men's basketball coach in 2012 after then-head coach Matt Siverling moved from Superior to UW-Eau Claire. Three seasons later UW-Superior moved from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). Eberhardt went 44-85 in five seasons with the Yellowjackets. UW-Superior finished 9-16, 8-8 in the UMAC last season.

"Since he arrived here in 2012 Paul has worn a few different hats, not just in our department but all around campus and has done whatever we've needed him to do over the years," said UW-Superior Athletics Director Nick Bursik in the University's release. "We hate to see him leave our men's basketball program, but understand his decision to move into a position that will allow him more time at home and with his young family."

Eberhardt's announcement follows the departure of UW-Superior head women's basketball coach Don Mulhern earlier this month. Mulhern, who led the Yellowjackets to consecutive UMAC titles, left to fill the head coaching vacancy at St. Catherine.

UW-Superior named alumnus Greg Polkowski as the interim head coach for the coming season. Polkowski, who played for the Yellowjackets from 2004 through 2008, spent the last two seasons as an assistant under Siverling at UW-Eau Claire. He was a finalist for the position when Eberhardt was eventually hired in 2012.

"The opportunity to come back to UW-Superior as the head men's basketball coach is something that I truly have only dreamed about until this point," Polkowski said in the University's release. "Since completing my time as a student-athlete in 2008, I have always thought to myself that the experiences I have encountered would prepare me to be the head men's basketball coach at UW-Superior if I was ever fortunate enough to have the opportunity. Now that it is reality it is beyond surreal, and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity."

UW-Superior opens the season against Colorado College at UW-Stout's tip-off tournament on November 17.
