Piedmont assistant coach Dan McNeely is sailing far up the east coast to become the new head men's basketball coach at Maine Maritime.

Director of Athletics Steve Peed announced the hiring on Thursday.

"Coach McNeely is a thoughtful leader with all of the right values and will prove to be an excellent mentor for our basketball players," said Peed in the school's release. "The committee most definitely had its work cut out for it with a tremendously deep and talented pool of candidates. In the end, Coach McNeely clearly distinguished himself from that group."

McNeely spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Piedmont in Demorest, Ga. He was previously an assistant coach at Manchester and a graduate assistant for men's basketball at The Citadel.

McNeely played one season at Wittenberg in 2005-06 when the Tigers finished as national runners up. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Wittenberg in 2010 and his Master's degree from The Citadel in 2012.

He replaces David Muchnick who went 13-62 in three seasons with the Mariners.

Maine Maritime went 5-20, 2-16 in the NAC last season.
