| Carter Shaw, Gordon's new women's basketball coach |
The Gordon College athletic department announced that Carter Shaw will take over as the next head coach of the Scots' women's basketball program. He becomes the sixth head coach since Gordon began competing in the NCAA during the 1988-89 season.
The veteran coach takes over for Corey Laster, who resigned in April after two years on the job and a 9-41 record to take the same position at Colorado Christian, a Division II school in Lakewood, Colo. Before coaching at Gordon, Laster coached four years at Division II UC-Colorado Springs where he went 59-51.
"I am excited to have Carter join our Fighting Scots family," said Gordon Athletic Director Jonathan Tymann. "He is a seasoned coaching veteran with a heart for God and a desire to mentor our young ladies. We begin with a good foundation of incoming recruits and a solid group of hard-working returners. I look forward to our women's basketball future and where it can excel in all areas."
Shaw comes to Gordon after spending the previous two years as head coach at Division II Cal State Los Angeles. Shaw's Golden Eagles posted double-digit win marks and a CCAA tournament appearance during his short time in the City of Angels.
Before taking the head gig with the Golden Eagles in 2014, Shaw spent 17 years as an assistant coach in the Division I ranks which included stops at UC Riverside, Colgate, Ball State, UC Santa Barbara, and Colorado State. He got his start in collegiate coaching as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of Utah.
Shaw takes over a team that returns the majority of its main contributors from a season ago including the team's top five scorers. Gordon finished a tiebreaker short of making the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament for the first time in a decade.
"I am humbled to be the new women's basketball coach at Gordon College. I am eager to partner with those in the athletic department and in student life and I welcome the challenge of integrating faith, learning, and student development while building the women's basketball program," Shaw stated. "My wife, Rebecca, and I are excited to become part of the Gordon College community. We look forward to raising our son in such a great location while we work at an institution that shares our commitment to Christ.
