Women's basketball is set to become the newest varsity sport at Sarah Lawrence, as announced by athletic director Kristin Maile.

"Women's basketball is long overdue at Sarah Lawrence," observed Maile. "The school has seen club teams come and go throughout our history, and the time has come to cultivate a lasting varsity program."

The school plans to develop its existing club team for the next two years so that women's basketball would be ready for its inaugural varsity season during the 2017-18 academic year.

Mark Burger, who has coached the club team since 2013-14, will remain at the helm of the team and continue the process of expanding the sport. Burger also serves as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team.

"Adding a varsity women's basketball program will offer a new and exciting aspect to Sarah Lawrence's rich culture," commented Burger. "I feel honored and privileged to be given the opportunity to lead the development of a varsity women's basketball program, and I could not be more excited."

The SLC women's basketball club team played one exhibition game in its first year and played three times in 2014-15. The 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons will provide opportunities for a progressive transition to a full varsity practice and competition season.

Women's basketball would become the college's eighth varsity program for women, joining crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. SLC also sponsors six men's teams and coed equestrian.
