Goucher's men's basketball program will undergo its first change in command in its 25-year history when Tom Rose takes over as head coach.
Rose, a 1995 graduate of Goucher, was named the successor to Leonard Trevino today by athletic director Geoffrey Miller, who headed a national search to fill the vacancy created when Trevino stepped down shortly after the 2014-15 season. Rose officially begins his new duties on Aug. 1.
During his 25 seasons at Goucher, Trevino guided the Gophers to a 277-354 record, four Capital Athletic Conference championships and three appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
"This was a highly competitive search, and we feel blessed to have found one of our own to be our next head basketball coach," Miller said. "Tom Rose is a man of integrity, is passionate about coaching basketball, is a hard worker, and what he has done at Mt. Carmel over the years is truly exceptional. He knows Goucher College and he knows college basketball.
"I have confidence that he will focus all of his energy and his organizational acumen on getting this basketball program back to where it was in the 1990s, winning conference championships and going to the NCAA Division III playoffs."
Rose played two seasons for Trevino, who was the head coach when men's basketball first became an intercollegiate sport at Goucher in 1990-91. He became one of Trevino's assistant coaches following graduation, and after four seasons in that post, he was elevated to associate head coach in July 1999.
For six of the seven years he was on Trevino's coaching staff, Rose also worked in Goucher's admissions office. He started as an admissions counselor and worked his way up to associate director.
In September 2002, Rose was named head boy's basketball coach and admissions director at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School in Baltimore. He took on additional duties as the school's advancement director in July 2004.
Rose, who went 215-159 in his 13 seasons at Mt. Carmel, was named Baltimore Catholic League Coach of the Year after guiding his team to a 29-8 record in 2014-15.
"My thanks and appreciation go to Geoff Miller and the search committee for selecting me as the second men's basketball coach in Goucher's history," commented Rose, who obtained a master's degree in athletic administration and leadership in 2000. "Goucher College has always been a special place for me and my family as it has literally changed our lives. I'm blessed to have the opportunity to fulfill a dream of mine and return to my alma mater to lead the men's basketball program.
"It is my objective to work with the athletic department staff, current and future players, students, faculty, alumni and the entire Goucher community as we rebuild a championship level program with an exciting home court environment. My vision is that we build a Goucher men's basketball family that will continue to develop and support young men, while preparing them for life after college."
