Salem Hoops Ends Season at Southern Virginia

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem basketball program concludes the 2021-22 season on Wednesday evening when it treks to Buena Vista, Va., for a USA South Conference game against Southern Virginia at 6 p.m.

Salem heads into its final game with a 4-19 overall record, including a 3-14 mark in USA South Conference play. Quntashea Lewis, a 2016 graduate of Salem, made significant strides with the program this year as it won multiple games for the first time since 2017-18, when Britni Mohney came through with a 10-15 record.

MUNN NAMED USA SOUTH ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Alize Munn became the second first-year Salem basketball player of the season to earn USA South Rookie of the Week honors when the league recognized her a series of performances last week. Munn joins Tamsi Echendu as the only players in program history to receive the Rookie of the Week honors from the USA South Conference.

The honors to Munn and Echendu, who earned the distinction on November 29, 2021, mark the first time since the 2015-16 season that Salem basketball has had multiple Player of the Week honors in the same season. In that season, now head coach Quntashea Lewis was named as Great South Player of the Week on both February 7, 2016 and February 14, 2016 for her performances on the court.

Munn put together a series of double-digit scoring performances last week against league foes Mary Baldwin (12 points), Averett (14) and William Peace (11). That gives Munn six double figure outings this season and marks the first time in her career that she has tallied three straight. For the week, she shot 16-of-34 (47.1%) from the floor, including 2-of-5 (40%) from beyond the arc, while finishing 3-of-5 (60%) at the free throw line in three starts for Salem. Defensively, she was active with 17 rebounds (10 defensive), two steals and a pair of blocks.

ANALYZING THE SPIRITS: Heading into the season finale, Salem has six players who have reached triple-digit scoring in USA South Conference action, including Tyler Davenport (172), Dionne Sampson (161), Cree Bass (148), Alize Brooks (115), Tamsi Echendu (114) and Alize Munn (112).

Davenport has taken advantage of hitting 53-of-133 (39.8%) from the floor as well as 61-of-79 (77.2%) from the free throw line to become the Spirits' leading scorer in the league. Sampson moved to within 11 points of the team lead in points on Saturday when she became the seventh different Salem scorer in the NCAA history of the program with a 30-point outing, pouring in 30 in an overtime victory over William Peace.

Sampson finished 13-of-24 (54.2%) from the floor in her performance, knocking down 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. She highlighted a Salem lineup that finished 37-of-89 (41.6%) from the floor and 15-of-25 (60%) from the free throw line. She also established the program-record in steals (12), becoming the third different Spirit this season (Tyler Davenport, Tamsi Echendu) to notch a double-double.

Bass has also been among the Top-3 scorers for Salem in league play this season, converting a team-best 22-of-65 (33.8%) from beyond the arc. She is responsible for the third-most field goals (51) against USA South opposition for the Spirits.

On the defensive end for Salem, Echendu tops the team in rebounds (112), while Lauren Privette has a team-best 16 blocks to her credit. Sampson, with 45 steals, and Bass, who has 26 steals, have been integral in Salem forcing 187 steals on the season.

LOOKING AT THE KNIGHTS: Southern Virginia heads into its final game of the regular of their last season with a 20-4 overall record, boasting a 16-1 mark in USA South action. The Knights have won 17 of their last 18 contests since December 4th with the lone setback (83-78) coming at Greensboro College on Wednesday, February 9th.

Katie Garrish, with 275 points to her credit, is the scoring leader for Southern Virginia versus league foes after hitting 120-of-215 (55.8%) from the floor and 35-of-56 (62.5%) at the free throw line. Teammate Savanna Christensen is second on the unit in scoring (204 points), leading the way in free throws (42-of-56), while also converting 75 field goals and 12 3-point field goals. The top 3-point shooter for the Knights is Emma Camden, who has 23 to her credit.
