SEAHAWKS NOTES FROM THE NEST

  • Senior Kevin Mannix and junior Andrew Bronstein are serving as captains for head coach Sean Foster in his 17th season.
  • Kevin Kelly scored a career-high 29 points in Saturday's win at Worcester State.
  • Kelly also had a career-high seven assists, the last one to Spencer on the game-winning bucket.
  • All five losses have been double-digit margins; Salve Regina has won the close games including a two-point win against Newbury (69-67) and one-point win against Worcester State (82-81).
  • After Kevin Kelly hit a pair of free throws with 32 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 81-79, the Seahawks used a successful full-court press to get the ball back on a Cameron Collins steal.
  • In its last home game (68-54 loss to Roger Williams), the teams combined to take just 16 free throws. Salve Regina had a season-high 30 free throw attempts against Colby-Sawyer on Nov. 17 in the Cave Classic.
  • Four different Seahawks have been high-scorer in games this season: Mikey Spencer (four times), Kevin Kelly (twice), Cameron Collins (twice), and Jonathan Friberg.

MARINERS MINUTES

  • Domenico Santiago leads the Mariners with 21.3 points per game and 16.7 rebounds per game.
  • Santiago has been named New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Week three times including most recently on Monday.
  • Steffen Brunson (15.5 ppg) and Hasani Williams (11.7 ppg) are also in double-figure scoring for Mitchell.
  • The Mariners have won two straight which includes handing neighboring Coast Guard its first loss of the season.
  • Santiago had 27 points and 19 rebounds in the 84-83 win; Brunson dished out 10 assists.
  • Hasani Williams tied the game at 83-83 on a layup and sank a free throw for the winning margin.

INSIDE THE SERIES
Tonight is the seventh meeting in the series which began in 2005. Salve Regina won the first three meetings, two on its home court; Mitchell has won the last three including twice last season in Connecticut. At the Yarnell Center last December, the Mariners trailed by eight with 34 seconds remaining in regulation but rallied back with a trio of three-pointers to send the game into extra time. Mitchell led by three in the first overtime before Salve Regina's Rodney Morton tied the score again with 2.4 seconds remaining. In the second and final OT, Domenico Santiago scored four points and blocked two shots as the home team squeezed out the win. It was the 24th time (and first since 2009) that Salve Regina men's basketball had scored over 100 points; only the second time losing when doing so.

WHAT'S NEXT?
