Lopes down Whittier 77-41 at home

Daniel leads GCU's highest-scoring game of season

The Grand Canyon women's basketball team secured its third consecutive home victory on Sunday with a 77-41 win over Whittier.

The Lopes (5-5) had their highest-scoring game of the season, led by senior poerforward Da'jah Daniel's 16 points and seven rebounds. She made all six of her field goal attempts on the team's 52% shooting day. GCU freshman point guard Jada Holland also scored in the double digits, finishing the game with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists.
 
GCU held the Poets (5-6) to 31% shooting and forced 17 turnovers. Sophomore power forward Carla Balague led the Lopes with a season-high 10 rebounds, helping a 41-26 overall board advantage for GCU.
 
The Lopes got off to a strong start in the game with a 7-0 run in the first 4:45. Holland contributed six of the seven points, including the Lopes' first basket with a jumper at 9:28. The Poets kept within seven points for the rest of the quarter, with the Lopes holding a 17-11 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
 
GCU hit its stride in the second quarter, kicking it off on a 9-0 run in the first 4 1/2 minutes. The run led to the Lopes extending their lead when sophomore guard Tianna Brown hit a 3-pointer for a 20-point lead with 4:54 left to play in the first half.

GCU freshman guard Jada Moss hit a 3-pointer, followed by a layup from sophomore forward Kennedi Shorts to improve to a 21-point lead before the Poets. Lopes sophomore point guard Laura Piera closed out the first half with a made free throw to secure a 40-20 lead going into break.
 
Daniel came out strong in the second half, making back-to-back layups to put the Lopes up 44-20. GCU kept it going with a 15-2 run and closed the quarter with a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Venla Varis for a 63-28 lead.
 
Another 9-0 GCU run in the fourth quarter gave the Lopes their largest lead at 72-31. The Poets bounced back with a 10-point run before Holland snapped their streak with three free throws at 1:51. Moss closed the game with a fastbreak layup for a 77-41 win.
 
The Lopes are back in action on Dec. 29 when play at California.
