Women's Hoops Game Notes vs. Muhlenberg

Mary Spicer and the Bullets will try to post a repeat of their last trip to Memorial Hall.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The top two picks on the Centennial Conference preseason poll square off in the league opener for both teams as No. 16 Gettysburg College heads to Muhlenberg College on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The Series
Muhlenberg leads the all-time series with Gettysburg 20-13. The Bullets have been unable to string together two consecutive victories in the series since 1993-94 and 1994-95 as the Mules have won 17 of the last 22 meetings. The Orange and Blue have won just twice at Memorial Hall since 1995, including last season's 22-point victory over then No. 18 Muhlenberg.

Last Meeting
The Bullets shot 54.7 percent from the field as part of an 82-60 victory at Muhlenberg last season. Gettysburg used a 13-0 run to jumped ahead 24-10 and led at the break 39-27. Four players finished in double-figures for the visitors, led by Caitlin Moser with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Julie McGrory notched a career high with 21 points and dished out six assists. Lauren Dadigan added 10 points and five rebounds and Sara Kinsley pitched in 10 points off the bench.

The Coach
Head Coach Mike Kirkpatrick is Gettysburg's all-time leader in coaching victories with a record of 297-225. He has led the Bullets to a winning record in 18 of his 21 seasons and is coming off a season in which he was named Centennial Conference Coach of the Year after his squad set a record for wins (24) and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Divisoin III Tournament.

Last Time Out
Gettysburg kicked off the new season by winning the title at the Frostburg State Jim Crawley Tip-off Tournament. The Bullets' average margin of victory on the weekend was 25.5 points in wins over York (N.Y.) (83-56) and Frostburg State (76-52). All-tournament selection Caitlin Moser posted a double-double in the opener with 23 points and a dozen boards, while MVP Julie McGrory tied a personal mark with 21 points in the finale.
Scouting the Mules
Muhlenberg is off to a 3-0 start after posting three victories on its home court. The Mules handled rival Moravian 68-55 to open the year, and then won their own Scott Wood Tournament by beating Mt. St. Vincent (101-47) and Richard Stockton (71-67). Alexandra Chili led the squad in scoring in each contest, including pouring in 29 points against Mt. St. Mary's. She is tied for the conference leading in scoring at 24 points per game. Alexandra Berlin and Alita Zabrecky are also averaging double-figures with the latter averaging a team-best eight rebounds per game.

National Rankings
Gettysburg received notice in two national preseason polls. The Bullets were ranked 16th and 17th in rankings put together by D3hoops and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), respectively. It is the first time Gettysburg has been ranked in a preseason polls and it comes on the heels of a season in which the team was ranked for the first time during the regular season in 15 years.

Conference Favorite
The Bullets were selected as the favorite to win the Centennial Conference this season by the coaches and sports information directors. Gettysburg received 13 first-place votes and 192 points to edge runner-up Muhlenberg, which totaled nine first-place nods and 188 points. It is the first time Gettysburg has been selected as the preseason favorite in the conference.

Preseason All-American
Senior Caitlin Moser begins her final campaign as a preseason All-America Fourth Team selection by D3hoops.com. A two-time first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection, Moser has never earned national honors from the website, though she was a first-team WBCA All-American in 2009-10.

Back at It
Gettysburg have picked up where they left off last season by limiting Frostburg State to less than 30 percent shooting from the field with 16 field goals in 54 attempts (29.6 percent). In 2009-10, the Bullets held seven opponents to less than 30 percent shooting. The squad also allowed just an average of 54 points per game in its first two contests, one year removed from finishing 10th in the nation in scoring defense at 51.9 points per game.

Season Opener Déjà vu
Senior Caitlin Moser posted 20 points in the season opener for the second consecutive year. Last season, Moser put up 20 against Wilkes in the opening game of the Frostburg tourney. For an encore this season, she lit the board for 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her 15th career double-double.

Return of the Mac
After putting up double-figures in 10 of the final 12 games of 2009-10, junior Julie McGrory was the lone Bullet to net 10 or more points in each of the first two games this season. She tallied 11 points in the opener against York (N.Y.) before tying a personal mark with 21 points in the championship game against Frostburg State. McGrory also set a career high by hitting 10-of-11 attempts from the charity stripe.

Ice in Her Veins
Freshman Alyssa Isler scored 13 points in her collegiate debut against York (N.Y.) last Friday. She finished 5-of-14 from the field and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc in 18 minutes of action. Isler was the first Bullet to score in double-figures in her collegiate debut since 2010 graduate Courtney Fields, who posted a dozen points against Mt. St. Mary (N.Y.) on Nov. 17, 2006.

Hitting the Freebies
Gettyburg knocked down 30 free throws against Frostburg State last Saturday. That marks the Bullets' highest total of makes from the charity stripe since going 30-of-39 agianst Washington on Feb. 4, 2006.
