Men's
John DiBartolomeo
DiBartolomeo scored 20 of his game high 24 points in the second
half against Ohio Wesleyan as the Yellowjackets opened a large lead
and held off the 22nd-ranked Battling Bishops. He had 10 points in
the first nine minutes of the second half to push Rochester firmly
ahead, 65-39. Against Cobleskill, DiBartolomeo played just 18
minutes in a 101-48 win, scoring four with six assists. In a win
against Nazareth, he scored 24 points in 33 minutes as Rochester
snapped a three-game losing streak to Nazareth. He averaged 17
points and had 18 assists on the week with just two turnovers.
Mike Cherry
Cherry helped CNU go to 4-0 for first time since 2004 with a 3-0
week. He averaged more than 40 minutes of playing time, primarily
due to a 54-minute performance in a quadruple overtime game against
Wesley. He scored 28 against Wesley and followed it up with 26
against John Carroll, including the game-winning shot with 3.5
seconds remaining. Cherry knocked down six 3-pointers against John
Carroll and added five in first two games of the week. He shot
22-for-24 from the free-throw line to help him average 24.3 points
for the week.
Darius Watson
Watson led the Falcons in back-to-back wins with 30 and 26 points,
respectively. In a 85-79 win over Western Connecticut, he shot
12-of-21 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line for 30
points in his team's season opener. Watson added 26 points on
8-of-16 shooting in the Falcons' 82-73 upset victory over
23rd-ranked Wesleyan in the Falcons' 2012-13 home opener.
Fran Rafferty
Rafferty led the Cavaliers to a pair of wins over Widener and
archrival Eastern. He knocked down a career best 10 free throws (in
11 attempts) against Eastern and hit a career high six 3-pointers
against Widener. He shot 61 percent from the floor, 7-for-10
from beyond the arc and 92 percent from the line for the week,
averaging 20.5 points and 5.5 rebounds.
Brandon Givens
Givens averaged 33.5 points per game in a 4-0 week, including a
program-record 43 against former USAC South opponent Shenandoah. He
shot 37-for-65 from the floor, 8-for-15 from 3-point range and
52-for-58 from the line, while also averaging 10.2 rebounds and
blocking five shots in the four games.
Women's
Alexis Popelar
Popelar had the go-ahead points in the Cowgirls' weekend wins over
Trinity (Texas) and Southwestern. On Saturday, she scored 37 points
in 39 minutes including two free throws with 24 seconds left to
push Hardin-Simmons past regional rival Trinity (Texas). The next
day Popelar scored 20 points against the Pirates including the
game-winner with 7.8 seconds left.
Allison Long
Long led the Saints to a 2-1 record that came up a few points
short of a perfect week and an upset of then top-ranked Calvin. She
started the week with a 10-point, five-assist effort in Thomas
More's 66-54 win over Bluegrass state rival Centre. Long scored 18
points for the Saints, including five three-pointers, in their
overtime loss to Calvin. She helped Thomas More bounce back with a
58-55 win over Capital in which Long dropped 26 points in 36
minutes of action.
Kate Walker
Walker's solid play keyed DePauw to two wins over Top 25 ranked
opponents and helped the Tigers become the new No. 1 team in the
country. On Saturday, Walker scored a team-high 18 points and
grabbed seven rebounds in 31 minutes of action against Washington
U. Walker hit two free throws with seven seconds left to win the
game, 60-59. On Sunday she helped the Tigers solve Illinois
Wesleyan's pressing defense as DePauw routed the Titans on their
floor, 75-52. Walker had 7 assists to only one turnover in 21
minutes.
Samantha Morford
Morford posted back-to-back double-doubles for Hiram in the
Terriers' wins over Westminster (Pa.) and Thiel. On Saturday she
scored 16 points and shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the field against
Westminster (Pa.). She also grabbed a key defensive rebound late
that helped the Hiram take a three possession lead on the Titans.
The Terriers held on to win 53-50. On Sunday Morford notched 18
points and 11 rebounds in 34 minutes as Hiram topped Thiel
62-57.
Kendra Lahue
The Whitworth junior forward recorded her first career
double-double in the Occidental/Caltech Thanksgiving Classic where
the Pirates beat both hosts over the weekend. In the first game
Lahue notched 20 points and 11 rebounds as Whitworth bested
Occidental. Lahue scored all the points in an 8-0 run that helped
the Pirates beat the Tigers 67-62. She followed that with 16 points
in limited action during Whitworth's 105-26 domination of
Caltech.
