This marks the third time in four years that Rochester and Amherst are in the same sectionals bracket. Three years ago, the Yellowjackets defeated Babson College at Brockport State and host Brockport eliminated Amherst. Rochester defeated Brockport to advance to the Final Four.

Two years ago, Amherst defeated Rochester, 74-62, in the Sweet 16 at Williams. The Lord Jeffs were placed in a different bracket last season. Rochester stayed in the East-Northeast Regional. The Yellowjackets lost to Keene State in the Sweet 16 at Williams.

Fisher (28-0) is enjoying its finest season in the program’s 42-year history. The Cardinals have set a new record for wins in a season and consecutive victories. There are 1,002 men’s basketball teams and 1,029 women’s basketball teams in the NCAA. With Illinois' loss to Ohio State on Sunday, Fisher is now the only undefeated in all of college basketball.

Potsdam State won the national championship in 1981, defeating Augustana in overtime in the title game, and again in 1986, beating LeMoyne-Owen.

Fisher is ranked No. 3 in the D3hoops.com national poll. It is the highest Fisher has ever been ranked. The 1998-99 squad, which finished the regular-season 24-1, before losing to Hamilton in the second round of the NCAAs, was ranked No. 4 nationally.

This will be the 17th all-time meeting between Fisher and Potsdam State. The all-time series is tied at 8-8. Despite being from the same state, the two schools have only met four times in the past 28 years. Potsdam defeated Fisher 71-67 in the 2000 ECAC Upstate Quarterfinals in the last meeting between the two schools.

Fisher's last win against Potsdam was in 1991. The Cardinals defeated the Bears 96-73 in the first round of the Rochester Classic at the War Memorial.

This marks the 11th time in the last 14 years Fisher has advanced to the Division III NCAA Tournament. Only two institutions (Wooster and Salem State) have been to NCAA's more than Fisher during that time. Fisher is 4-10 in NCAA Tournament action, however, and is making its first ever trip to the Sweet 16.

Potsdam has won 32 of its last 36 games since a 63-59 loss at Plattsburgh on Feb. 17, 2004.

Four of Fisher’s five starters (Jeff Sidney 14.0; Sean O’Brien 13.8; Mike McGee 10.1; Nick Bennett 10.0) are scoring in double figures, with each of the four players leading Fisher in scoring at least once in the last five games. Throughout the season, six different players have led Fisher in scoring.

Amherst is making its eighth overall and sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the Final Four for the first time last season, the national quarterfinals in 1994 and 2003, the round of 16 in 2002 and the second round in 1997, 2000 and 2001. The Jeffs are 12-8 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, including a perfect 7-0 record in LeFrak Gymnasium.

While he is likely only the second-best player by the same name remaining in the tournament, Nick Bennett is clearly the catalyst for Fisher. Bennett led the Empire 8 with 50 steals and has become a 40-minute-per-game guy in recent weeks, responsible for shutting down the opposition’s top scorer. Last week he forced J.D. Byers, the Division III Jostens Trophy winner, to shoot just 6-for-21 from the floor. In Fisher’s two Empire 8 tournament wins, Bennett held Rochester Tech’s Kyle Goff to just three points (1-for-8 from the floor) and forced Ithaca’s Jim Bellis to shoot 3-for-11 from the field (eight points). UW-Stevens Point's Nick Bennett averaged 30.6 points per game for the national champions in last year's postseason.
