FREDERICK, Md. (November 12) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team's first 10 baskets were three-pointers as the Jackets rolled to a 74-60 victory at Hood in the Jackets' road opener on Tuesday evening.
Waynesburg moves to 2-0 for the first time in 2016-17 while Hood falls to 0-2.
The Blazers led 4-3 after two minutes of play before Waynesburg took the lead for good with a 15-0 run as the Jackets drained five three-pointers kept Hood off the scoreboard for nearly five minutes of game time. The Jackets led 21-10 at the end of the quarter with all 21 points coming via three-pointers as Jaden Sturm (Clarksburg, W.Va. / Robert C. Byrd), Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) and Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) each drained two treys in the opening 10 minutes.
Hood narrowed the margin to 21-15 early int eh second quarter before Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding), Henkins and Macie Justice (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) each canned threes in a 9-0 run that pushed the Waynesburg edge to 30-15. Waynesburg carried a 20-point lead into halftime. Eleven of Waynesburg's 14 first-half made field goals triples and the Jackets' first 10 field goals were threes.
Friday scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Waynesburg lead swelled to 23 points (57-34) late in the period. Hood competed to the end and won the fourth quarter 23-15 to bring the score to the final margin of 74-60.
Friday finished with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Liv Ammons (Wadestown, W. Va. / Clay-Battelle) added 15 points on six-of-seven shooting, along with five rebounds and three steals. McFadden and Henkins each had nine points on three three-pointers and Sturm and Justice both made two threes.
Waynesburg shot 14-of-28 from deep for the game with half of its made field goals being threes. The Jackets had 14 steals leading to 31 points off turnovers and had a 42-19 edge in bench scoring.
Waynesburg hosts Carlow on Friday evening for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
