William Paterson Women's Basketball Cruises to 30-Point Home Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (4-7, 2-4 NJAC) cruised to a 68-38 non-conference win over Gwynedd Mercy (7-5, 0-0 Atlantic East) Dec. 16 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Pioneers held a five-point edge (15-10) through the first 10 minutes of action and outscored the Griffins, 13-5, in the second frame to go into the halftime break with a double-digit lead (28-15).
  • Sophomore Patricia Walsh opened the third quarter with a jumper that sparked a 15-4 WP run to extend the Pioneers' lead to 24 (43-19).
  • From the 3:55 mark of the third frame to the 5:40 mark of the fourth, the Pioneers outscored Gwynedd Mercy, 20-3, to make it a 36-point (63-27) game before securing the 68-38 home win.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Senior Brianna Smith recorded a game-high 15 points on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting while knocking down five 3-pointers.
  • Sophomore Renee Wells finished with 12 points, four boards and seven assists.
  • The seven helpers tied her career-best mark.
  • Walsh had 10 points and eight rebounds.
  • Junior Jade Martinez went 4-for-7 (.571) from the field for nine points with five rebounds and three assists.
  • Freshman Mattison Chiera logged eight points, six rebounds and a career-high four steals.

  • William Paterson heads to Springfield, Mass., Sunday, Dec. 31, to take part in the two-day Springfield Tournament. The Pioneers will open on Dec. 31 against host Springfield at 4:30 p.m. before facing off against St. John Fisher the following day at 2:00 p.m.
