MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Vikings clinched the season opener win on the road against Huntingdon College with a 66-55 final.
The first six points of the game were back and forth from both squads. At the six-minute mark, a Hawks three surged them on a 14-2 run to go up 20-8. The Vikings made an effort to close the gap with three free-throws in the final minute to be within 10 heading into the second quarter (22-14).
Kenadie Lee led the team with 10 point in 10 minutes, as she was perfect from the foul line and had the Vikings only made field goal.
Newcomer Jeryn Jerret took over the scoring in the second quarter with 7 points coming off the bench. Her made made three-pointer brought Berry within four of the Hawks with 7:31 remaining in the first half. Still an ongoing battle, Ellie Gearing brought the deficit to three with a made jump shot in the final two minutes before heading to halftime after a Huntingdon made free-throw, 31-27.
The second half was all Vikings. Six made free throws in the third quarter benefited Berry's battle to take the lead. Digging their way back to a 34-34 tie sponsored by a Lee free-throw, Berry began to spark momentum.
After two ties, a third appeared at 41 and the Vikings took their first lead with 1:50 left in the third quarter (43-41), forcing a Hawks timeout.
Berry held the lead until the final seconds of the third.
Heading into the fourth, down by one, the Vikings looked to finally take and hold the lead after fighting from behind for 30 minutes. With five minutes left in the game Sylvia Kahoro snapped the Hawks lead with a made jump shot at 54-52, this takeover solidified the remainder of the night.
The Vikings began to pull away and finalized the game with a 12-2 run to capture their second win in a row against Huntingdon.
